Why 2027 Will Change MotoGP Forever

MotoGP is entering its final year with the technical package that's defined the sport since the early 2000s. Starting in 2027, the premier class will move from 1000cc engines down to 850cc, a change aimed at reducing top speeds and cornering forces that have made modern MotoGP bikes some of the most physically demanding machines to ride in motorsport history.

Alongside the engine downsize, tyre supply is shifting too — Pirelli will take over from Michelin as the official tyre supplier, ending a long-standing partnership and introducing a new variable that every team will need to adapt to. Aerodynamics, ride-height devices, and other technical aids that have transformed racing in recent seasons are also expected to face tighter restrictions under the new rules.

For teams and riders, that makes the current 2026 season about more than just the championship trophy — it's the last chance to extract every advantage from a bike package they've spent years refining, before starting over with new machinery in 2027. Manufacturers are already believed to be deep into development on their 850cc prototypes behind the scenes, even while their current bikes are still fighting for podiums.
